Hoodoo Gurus' 2010 new record starts off with an energetic, punchy rocker called 'Crackin' Up' which many younger rock bands would probably dream of writing one day.
This song reminds me of the heady days of Aussie music in the mid 1980s, when French label Closer Records allowed many avid European listeners to discover the cream of Australian rock music which such Aussie labels as Citadel were releasing by the dozens down under.
Some twenty-six years after their fantastic debut called 'Stoneage Romeos' in 1984, 'Purity of Essence' is an amazing comeback album for Hoodoo Gurus, so good that it might well be one of the band's best records.
It is extremely varied and successfully tackles soul pop on the tonic 'Only in America' as well as a lot of other music styles.
In fact, the eclecticism at work on 'Purity of Essence' may be one of the album's weaker points but if variety is what you expect from a record (as opposed to uniformity), then this one is for you.
