Berliner Jochen Briesen follows up his first album as Semuin with this disarmingly unguarded collection of electronic compositions for general MIDI instruments. This most maligned of sonic palettes is rendered thoroughly adorable - even credible - on Circles And Elephants. Perhaps similar in spirit to Susumu Yokota's recent ambient work or even Max Tundra's playful virtuoso programming, these pieces transcend the sort of naivety you'd associate with these clumsy synth-orchestral sound sets and presents something of genuine compositional value. 'Greeting Prelude' and 'Elefanz' transform MIDI instruments into highly musical, often very experimental sonorities, shifting through intriguing modern compositional forms like 'Neve' in the direction of more surreal, heavily processed sounds as reached on the snarling digital noise-scapes of 'Stem (II)'. Unusual and thoroughly impressive material all round.
