Breakinbread continue their reputation for dropping extra-special funk albums with Color Climax’s debut.
And yes, the spelling of their name is their doing, not ours.
We’re not quite sure why they’ve taken the American spelling, though given their influences throughout the funk and jazz canon it sort of makes sense. This is a band from Coventry.
At any rate, it hardly matters because Plug It In is the business. Paul T and Steve Ashby’s gorgeous, slightly sleazy funk is enormously addictive and, while not completely flawless, this is well worth owning. The title track stands out, as does the claustrophobic ‘Disque O Heights’ and the meandering ‘Jellyfish Popcorn’.
The album exposes its weakness when vocals are added into the mix, as they often become repetitive. So Plug It In really succeeds when the instruments are left to breathe, at which point it becomes something truly special. It’s not Two-Tone, but the midlands are as funky as ever.
