Julius R?ntgen grew up in Leipzig and left for Amsterdam in 1878. Although he was to remain the rest of his life in the Netherlands, he never lost touch with his German origins. From a very young age R?ntgen gives proof of his musical talents. He is praised by Liszt, Brahms and Clara Schumann, to name a few.
His compositions are attractive and reveal a big hearted personality totally in love with music. Even in the works through which a certain despair resounds, we always hear a trace of hope and joy in life. Compared with the German school as a whole, his style is looser and freer, with the many folkloric influences having a more Northern orientation and being less well-crafted. His orchestrations are light, supple and transparent. He creates long melodic lines that return in various guises and that are filled in with smaller motives that themselves create a differing mood. All the above is to be heard in his three cello concertos.
