专辑简介

These issues of Chinese Music Masterpiece Series include three kinds of orchestral music. They include Zhong-Gu Yue (Bell and Drum Music), Sheng-Guan Yue (Free-reed and Double-reed Music) and Si Zhu Yue (Silk and Bamboo Music), the scores of which are selected by Music Director Sinyan Shen. The history of Chinese musical instruments has been a history of new resonator discovery, new use of physiology in acoustical excitation, and musical acoustics. Acoustical research in the 20th Century revealed a most distinguished history of the science of music in China. Ancient China possessed a level of acoustical science that was essential in supporting the elaborate musical art of those periods. Physics and engineering worked hand in hand to perfect musical instruments and to arrive at desirable orchestration. These are accomplishments that have modern counterparts. In contrast, the overall design of a large set of dual-pitch zhong bells for the performance of music is an achievement that has no equal in the modern physics of music (Sinyan Shen, Acoustics of Ancient Chinese Bells, Scientific American, 256, 94 (1987)). Chinese music is built on a totally consistent harmonic system which controls melodic progression, orchestration, and temperament use. It is perhaps the only major musical system in the world that has such all-encompassing requirements on all aspects of its music, and at the same time allowing the largest flexibility in the acceptance of harmonic intervals into music (Sinyan Shen, China: A Journey into Its Musical Art, Chinese Music Monograph Series, Chinese Music Society of North America, Chicago (2000)).
