This now-historic 1963 recording was the first ever of an opera by Giuseppe Gazzaniga (1743-1818), a composer by then totally forgotten but author of an opera with a most familiar title and hero, which aroused enough curiosity to stage a revival. Gazzaniga's version of the same story as Mozart's Don Giovanni, but with text by a different author, premiered in the same year as Mozart's far more famous opera--but eight months earlier. The official title of the Gazzaniga opera is Don Giovanni Tenorio, o sia Il Convitato di Pietra. "Tenorio" is simply the original surname of the legendary lover; the rest means "or, The Stone Guest."
