When the great Russian film director Andrey Tarkovsky worked in Italy on "Nostalgia" (1982-1983), he had with him Russian records with folk songs performed by a Pskovian peasant woman Olga Sergeeva. The song "Kumushki" (CD 1, track 29) is played twice in the film - in the beginning and at the end, framing a drama story about the unsettled émigré life. The song is played against the background of idyllic Russian landscapes so dear to the protagonist's heart. Tarkovsky also used the recordings of a wedding mourning and a vocal imitation of violin in the film, when the singer is freely improvising, netting the lace of sound simliar to a gentle touch of a bow across strings (CD 2, track 7). Sergeeva's voice deems to have become a musical symbol of Russia to the film director.
Olga Fedoseevna Sergeeva (1922-2002) was an outstanding folk singer. Thanks to Tarkovsky she gained international fame. Her voice sounds rich and deep and at the same time reserved, even subdued. From the first sounds it charms you with a wonderful harmony and beauty. Austerity and simplicity are combined with improvisation and freedom, masterly vocal technique, brilliant variation, and fineness of melody expression.
The unique talent of Olga Sergeeva revealed fully when she sang solo. However, at a festive gathering in the field or at a wedding she equally enjoyed leading a collective singing. Her voice went lower and louder, in line with the other singers, as if it acquired the ancient magic power that influences nature and fate (CD 1, track 5; CD 2, track 6).
CD 1 mostly consists of songs representing an agricultural cycle, starting from the spring seasons and ending with the ritual of saying goodbye to the winter at the Shrove-tide. Some other songs are also attached to the calendar events, such as lyric songs, which used to be sung during the fasting; humorous songs and ditties performed at youth gatherings in autumn and winter time; or soldier songs related to autumn and spring military drafts.
The songs from CD 2 reflect most important events in a person's private life: wedding, family life, serving in the army.
Genres and subject matters referring to calendar and and family life typically overlap, as traditional peasant mentality sets no difference between personal life and the environment. Peasants feel an inner relation with the land that feeds them and keep up with the rhythm of nature.
