Jahdan Blakkamoore is a Brooklyn local hero. Beloved for his charismatic stage presence, pointed lyrics, and powerful voice, Jahdan brings the perspective of Rasta sufferation to the streets of New York in the post-9/11 landscape.
Born in Guyana, after crossing into the US alone and undocumented at the ripe age of 8, he quickly began to absorb the swirl of music that thumps out of car trunks and crackles across the pirate airwaves of the borough of kings. Making his first impact with NYC's golden-era street rap legends Boot Camp Clique, Jahdan has been bridging the gap between hiphop, dancehall and roots reggae ever since, collaborating with artists ranging from DJ Premiere and M1 of Dead Prez, to reggae singer Lutan Fyah, jazz great Branford Marsalis, to his own hiphop/reggae trio Noble Society.
Jahdan was introduced to the sound of the UK Grime upon linking up with 77Klash & Team Shadetek for the street smash "Brooklyn Anthem". Excited by the viral success of that tune -- it sparked a YouTube dance craze among the Carribbean teens of NYC and was featured on best-selling videogame EA Sports Madden '08, Jahdan has linked up with DJ /rupture and Matt Shadetek to continue his explorations into the world of the international urban underground via the We Are Raiders EP, and forthcoming November 2008 album,Buzzrock Warrior.
Recorded over the past 2 months by the team of Matt Shadetek, DJ Rupture, and Geko Jones, Jahdan's We Are Raiders EP is the flagship release on Dutty Artz, the new multimedia tropical storm dedicated to exploring global underground sounds and flying their wildstyle New York Tropical flag everywhere they go. Not content to simply revisit past successes, the EP finds Jahdan touching down on deep dub-inflected Cumbia beats from Buenos Aires by Chancha Vía Circuito, synthetic Dancehall from Vienna's Stereotyp, plus two riddims from lifelong Manhattan boy Shadetek which both reflect and bend the UK dubstep sound.
Known for setting trends, mashing genres and breaking rules, DJ Rupture & Matt Shadetek continue to blaze a trail bringing songwriting and humanity to the Dubstep, Cumbia and Global Underground scenes. While mash-ups, unlicensed sampling, pay-by-mail vocals and other forms of one-way non-collaboration prevail in these producer/DJ-oriented scenes, the Dutty Artz team place an emphasis on the more difficult but intensely more rewarding route of collaboration, dialogue and friendship. The DA family believe that by sitting in a room together, vibesing, drinking, debating, and recording ,a much richer synthesis is possible,one that can bridge street sufferation and heady experimentation, creating music with long legs capable of crossing national border-lines, social boundaries and musical maps.
