The Roman Catholic pilgrimage from Roncevalles to Santiago de Compostella is the inspiration for Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles (2005), a work for a cappella choir on a libretto by Robert Dickinson, assembled from original texts and excerpts from the medieval Codex Calixtinus. There is a profound, meditative quality to this piece that devotees of the music of John Tavener or Arvo P?rt will appreciate immediately, but Talbot's command of choral techniques and Tenebrae's mastery of his demanding music are aspects of this presentation that should not be overlooked. This is no slavish pastiche of old church music, and Talbot is always careful to avoid the easy clichés of contemporary sacred styles; yet his intricately conceived and constantly changing music is eclectic in the best sense, varied in invention but always appropriate to the meanings and rhythms of the words. Under the direction of Nigel Short, Tenebrae's expressive range is equal to that of any first-rate chamber choir, and its precise diction, immaculate intonation, and transparent vocal blend are marvelous to hear, especially in the ecstatic harmonies of the closing section. Whether or not this CD has the desired spiritual impact — some listeners may find the macaronic texts mystifying rather than mystical, and some non-Catholics may find the devotion to St. James only of historical interest — it is a superb musical achievement by both the composer and the performers, and should be regarded as one of the most compelling releases of 2006.
