Superb improv trio formed by Michel Doneda (soprano and sopranino saxophones), Giuseppe Ielasi (guitar, electronics) and Ingar Zach (drums, percussion) whose aesthetics , although are certainly rooted in the finest European improv music, are one step ahead of it, going even further in the exploration of improvisation. It’s something that might be called “reductionism” or “new improve”, although both definitions suck.
Doneda playing strikes you by it’s honesty and approach to the instrument. He uses a variety of extended techniques delivering some really beautiful harsh, unusual sounds, much like fellow contemporaries like Greg Kelly or Peter Evans. Ielasi, unlike is solo work, that tends to focus more on complex sounds and /or drones, is here as minimal and sparse as ever, filling the three pieces with tiny notes, tiny details (that in the end reveal to be essential), or adding warm drones, that slowly dissolve in space . Zach, with his minimal approach to drumming ( somehow reminding me of Cesár Burago work with Sei Miguel at some points), gives the necessary focus and color to the pieces, making subtle but decisive work.
Anyway, great music, great great music.
