Compositionally adept and striking song structures from a source that has been around the block a few times and can push the limits without breaking too many boundaries. Anything remotely touching the vast universe which is the Sonic Youth machine will inevitably be compared to said machine. Maelstrom from Drift, in that sense, is an extension of a couple of decades growth that is fortunately let loose on it's own, so Ranaldo, in this secular space, apart from the SY Religion, is able to explore and unleash something beyond the confines of the compound.
Production-wise, Maelstrom from Drift is somewhat clean and sanitized, especially when compared to many other drone/noise releases coming out these days. This is not surprising, and is inevitable, considering the panoply of resources that must be at Ranaldo’s disposal. That being said, there is a certain roughness of aesthetic that keeps things grounded. The key to the entire process is found in the title. The pieces drift through an expanse that threatens to break into chaos, but is always held intact by an undercurrent of structure that almost goes unnoticed. Glacial drones move slowly down valleys of crumbling rocks and through ages of experimentation. Spiritual spaces create circumspection.
A ticking time bomb of sounds blows through a sleepless night as we are awoken in a cold sweat, thus realizing that the dreamscapes created are more powerful and moving than most of Ranaldo’s peers, or should I say followers, are able to manage. The slickness created by the ravages of time and nature are witnesses to a history of experimentation that is not at all culminated here, but furthered and fomented on to a different plane of existence.
A primordial scream, a giggle, a whisper, all placed randomly? Questionable. Are these potent signifiers of a reality that denotes fears more than passions? Not always. In places Maelstrom devolves, while in others it evolves, creating a perfect representation of the worlds we inhabit. This look in the mirror is one of the chief reasons we experiment with sound. Beyond the pure enjoyment of the sounds themselves, there is an introspection to be had, one that literature or film cannot explore, and one that only our aural senses can decode.
