专辑简介
“What’s the relation between music and the sound that gives it life ?” asks Phlippe Beaussant in the booklet that accompanies this recording devoted to Liszt’s piano. Why is this very question, at the heart of the “baroque rebirth”, seldom or not heard in the context of 19th century music ?
Patrick Scheyder tries to convey answers to these questions in this recording, and while at it, he takes a fresh look at the tradition of Liszt interpretations. Although claims of “tabula rasa” often are often made, Patrick Scheyder has taken a radical approach to reveal the long lost link between the instrument and its specific technique, bypassing the ubiquitous domination of the technologically more advanced piano-machine. His vision is courageous as well as deeply personal in a world obsessed with virtuoso performance and academism. Beyond creating his own technique, the musician’s familiarity with improvisation is essential to understand his playing. The recording, devoted to piano works by Liszt and played on a Pleyel built in 1846 contributes to turn this CD into a manifesto, as was the case with the poem Mazeppa, published by Victor Hugo in 1828. The last piece is an improvisation, as a personal and musical conclusion to the programme.
The disc is illustrated by a painting by Horace Vernet, Mazeppa and the wolves (1826).
