The young, extraordinarily gifted composer Giovanni Paisiello wrote the opera La Serva Padrona (Maid Turned Mistress) in 1781 while staying at the court in St. Petersburg under Catherine the Great. Paisiello’s opera uses a larger orchestra with wind instruments and a slow story line in addition to a secular, subtle portrayal of the protagonists. The recording on this CD was made in 1991, with Anne Victoria Banks and Gian Luca Ricci in the main roles. The Milan Chamber Orchestra was conducted by Paolo Vaglieri, who also formed the orchestra. The orchestra performed using a copy of the original score published by Choizeau in Paris in 1803; Paolo Vaglieri revised the work.
