专辑简介

It?s a bold statement to use your name to alienate anyone
except the occasional sentient being from outer space with
your chosen moniker. Lets just say it didn?t exactly work out
for Selfish C**t. But it would be even worse and far less
acceptable if the anger expressed in that statement was only a
  cynical marketing ploy.
Thankfully Naomi Scott is the real deal, sentiment-wise, from
the delicate, artfully-produced, black-hearted box set of
stickers, badges and press gumpf that accompany the simply
illustrated CD, to the hand-written dedication to her late
nanny and granddad on the reverse.
There is absolutely no danger of Naomi being compared with any
of the current female favourites (Lily, Amy, Adele et al).
Although initially part of the anti-folk scene, ?Pipe Dreams
And Lullabies? contains a healthy serving of punk attitude and
boasts 100 per cent DIY recording ethics. Breaking out of a
past spent in jobbing punk bands Naomi moved to the city and
dug out a guitar. She is clearly spiritually indebted to Patti
Smith and Janis Joplin, she is gravely of voice and rebellious
  in sentiment.
Musically influenced by nu-wave, Naomi?s backing band are
drawn from London-based math rockers Tea With The Queen giving
the whole album a more complex acoustic vibe, if only they
could pick up the pace from the plodding beat that afflicts
much of the record. In her less raspy moments she actually
sings quite delicately and comparisons with the histrionic
blues rock of Jeff Buckley are not as wide of the mark as they
may first seem. Naomi says: ?I couldn?t mean more if I tried /
  And I try.?
And therein lies the crux of the problem, Naomi?s vocals are
all a little bit too Nigel Kennedy. The rough rasp sounds
forced and frankly pretty uncomfortable. The middle section of
the record allows her more natural voice to float out in some
unguarded moments for example when she isn?t singing about a
song being definitely, absolutely, not a love song, and the
London smoke getting in to her lungs.
Aside from those rabidly jolly topics Naomi also regales us
with tales of drinking to drown out the noise on the defensive
?Chin Up, Guard Down?, and drunk dickheads in erm ?Drunk
Dickhead Strikes Again?. When your closest comparison is KT
Tunstall you know you?re in trouble and our advice to Naomi is
simple ? there isn?t much wrong with the songs - gritty urban
balladeering is an eternally popular past time (just ask Billy
Bragg) - but there isn?t much need to sound like a 14-year-old
Kurt Cobain fan while you do it.
