This famous but rare, live Bill Evans session features the amazing young bassist Scott LaFaro and master drummer Paul Motian, in the early years of his career. This piano trio is rated by many as the best in jazz history. Recorded at Birdland in 1960, this session comes between the superb Riverside albums “Portrait In Jazz” (59) and “Explorations” (61) both with the same trio.
This was Evans' first working trio, and brought him firmly into the public eye. It followed the “Kind of Blue” recording in 59 and there was even talk of this trio recording with Miles. In June ’61, the trio cut the famous “Live at the Village Vanguard” sessions for Riverside, but only 10 days later LaFaro was killed in a car accident. Bill Evans was so affected by his death that he didn’t perform for almost a year - describing LaFaro as “one of the most, if not the most outstanding talent in jazz”.
These essential Birdland broadcast performances were originally recorded on tape by Boris Rose, and previously released by him on LP on the Session, Ozone and Alto labels.
