As a fan of all things fetid I had grown to love Lividity. When Matt Bishop left the band I figured the end had come, but the group was resurrected and ‘Used, Abused, and Left For Dead’ has proven to be a stalwart release without Bishop, although the music is more tech brutal than it is gore. Then I learned that Human Artifacts, a band featuring Bishop had been created. After months of waiting I was happier than a maggot chewing a road kills bloated intestines to drop ‘The Principles of Sickness’ into my player.
Immediately after pushing play I was disemboweled by double vocals that reek a stench of monumental filth via cricket braying, bullfrog sex burps, intimidating nasal gags, and bottomless Death Metal growls. Most of the music runs either mid-paced or fast with occasional creeping lurches. The drums lead the pace with extremely effective blast beats that have been placed quite well in each arrangement thereby giving listeners an unquenchable desire to stomp around in the ol mosh pit. The bass compliments with the thuggish tone of a cattle stampede enhancing the pit riffage in each song. Monster too are the double guitars played in thick stabbing strums giving the music a semiautomatic riff style that staggers like queefs busted out of the snatch of a slut gangbanged by the band.
All right, enough with the written metaphorical commentary on the Human Artifacts sound. The reality is they wouldn’t sound fucking awesome had it not been for stellar engineering, production, mixing, and mastering. Now, I have never been big on perfect production. My rational is simple due to the fact that Old School bands like Master or Obituary (Among many others) released outstanding sounding material without studio knowledge or Bob Rock rubbing their dials. Black Metal bands have made a living off of a cold/grim/satanic ambiance and Goregrind almost oozes puss in its production. Still, mixing and mastering does matter cause it can seriously deter the musicianship conveyed into the listeners ears. A prime example of what I am getting at is the last 2 Brodequin albums, which sound like the microphones were placed outside of the studio during the recording process… Sure some intricate riffing is going on but you can hardly hear it in that faulty mix. By comparison, ‘The Principles of Sickness’ sounds insanely pulverizing due to lucid production that has brought out a near perfect equilibrium in sound between the instruments making Human Artifacts sound like an 18-wheeler filled with concrete rolling over your body from toes to skull.
‘The Principles of Sickness’ is in part a return to the old Lividity sound, but this shouldn’t be a surprise due to Matt Bishop’s presence. But it is important to realize that Human Artifacts isn’t Lividity with another name. Human Artifacts has carved a niche for themselves via simple but precise music, adroitly arranged songs, exceptional production, and an absolutely perverse/gore theme dripping like mucus off a fat kids upper lip. ‘The Principles of Sickness’ is mandatory, and if you are fucking pussy that cannot separate art from entertainment then send me an email with your address cause I’ll be glad to slap you in the face with a copy of this CD. BUY, BUY, BUY, BUY!!!
