Messiaen (1908 - 1992) was a colossusof post-Impressionist French music. His art, underlain by Christian mysticism and twining about a vast theoretical superstructure involving synthetic scales, palindromic rhythms, quasi-serial procedures, anda vocabulary of motifs abstracted from bird-song, encompassed major philosophical themes exhaustively explored in works of huge proportions.
Cast in 10 movements, the Turangalila Symphony takes its namefrom the Sanskrit words for "time" and "love". Messiaen termed it "a song of love; a hymn to the superhuman joythat transcends everything." thus, outsized Romantic gestures abound throughout.
