Uke’s new record, the duet formed by Laura Soriano y Roberto Martín (of the band Niza), is like a tiny music box, or maybe like one of those jewel boxes our mothers used to have which caught our imagination when we were children. After last year’s debut mini CD “Boreal”, the music and sounds of this new record immerse us straight into a world of fantasy. It transforms our surroundings into a childlike world, just like the toy instruments they have used to produce these 10 new songs. But of course childlike doesn’t mean childish, and the record depicts, in fact, a different way to see reality and a brand new take on na?ve pop music. For a start, the composition process is different. Toy instruments are used to create simple melodies that intertwine and develop into
proper songs, like musical cobwebs in a room. Infantile melodies which come covered with a veil of mystery, and in some cases become obsessive and enigmatic, like in a dream. Uke’s wonderful unorthodoxy is evident in the record, with saxes, drums, toy accordions, samples of films, recitations, torn newspapers, drink cans and tea mugs used as elements of the music, which also features more traditional elements like electric guitar and bass. The only difference with “Boreal” is a prevalence of instrumental songs over vocals. We are convinced that this collection of musical pieces will appeal to almost every taste, like a placid surrealistic trip along a path crammed with magic, dreams and a sort of music almost unheard in the Spanish indie scene, and which links Uke with the likes of Pascal Comelade, Klimperei, Vincent Gallo, Don Nino, Mi and l’Au or his contemporary Amiina, and their comforting musical universe.
