Neon Christ starts off as a competent hardcore EP, with "Parental Suppression" and "Winding / Bad Influence" mapping out the usual terrain with some effectiveness. The eponymous track is the best one, which follows the tried and true pattern of having a catchy pop intro featuring only vocals and guitar only to (SURPRISE) turn into a hardcore punk song. "Neon Christ" emerges as the best thing on this EP, and, sadly enough, the B-side is hardly worth listening to at all. It features all the old hardcore cliches, including the two-second track ("Yoof") and the genre defying ballad closing out the set. This one's fun but breaks little to no new ground.
One of the few responses to punk from Atlanta, Neon Christ produced an excellent hardcore EP that's a cut above the rest. Slashing guitars, nails-on-a-chalkboard vocals and a no-nonsense rhythm section burn though a batch of good songs. The only real criticism is that the drummer occasionally drifts off track, but it's not all too noticeable when you're on a runaway train like this EP.
