专辑简介

From International Record Review
Michelle Makarski came to notice with her enterprising recital, ‘Caoine' (also on ECM). If that came across as not quite the sum of its parts, the present release finds a natural focal point in the tradition of Italian virtuosity that has continued over centuries and cultures. Its features are well illustrated by Tartini's Seventh Sonata, where a formal and harmonic poise co-exist in music which, compared to the equilibrium of Bach, exists on the cusp of unrestrained emotional expression.
Dallapiccola's Due Studi of 1946-47 occupy much more understated territory: the first is a haunting nightscape, anticipating the richer shadings of his Piccola musica notturna; the second is an aggressive dialogue, a reminder that the searing opera Il prigionero was still evolving. Makarski gets to the heart of the latter, though the former could do with a touch more vibrato to underline its sombre expressivity. >From much the same period, Berio's Due Pezzi is more than a formative work, less than a statement of conviction. Yet the diverse material of the first piece is bound together with an easy virtuosity denoting the future composer of the Sequenza cycle, while its successor has a rhythmic incisiveness of which Bartók would no doubt have approved.
Petrassi's Elogio per un'ombra is a searching tribute to his predecessor Alfredo Casella. Perhaps the latter's espousal of the Fascist cause explains, in part, its ambivalent spirit, though not its stylistic caprice and technical freedom, which are central to Petrassi's undogmatic musical psyche. Makarski's scintillating reading suggests an intuitive grasp of this spontaneous and quixotic music. Carter's Riconocenza pays tribute to Petrassi at the time of his eightieth birthday, its pliability of emotion realized through an unassuming variety of means. George Rochberg's Caprice Variations, by contrast, are an extensive and ingenious summation of violin techniques, reaching out across a century-and-a-half to Paganini's Caprices, to a degree to which the latter would surely have responded.
Lamento di Tristano takes us back, beyond Tartini, to the likely beginning of Italian instrumental writing: music that finds poetry in technique and meaningfully expressed virtuosity. It's this latter quality that Makarski displays to the full in this enterprising and atmospherically recorded recital.
