专辑简介

Between the years 1806 until 1808, Cherubini did next to no composing. Completely depressed, he spent most of every day studying botany and drawing, and inventing herbals. Had he been as diligent in his study of the visual arts as he had been with the musical arts, he would have become a fine draftsman and painter. The famous French artist David was an admirer and friend who esteemed both his music and his drawings. In the summer of 1807, the Prince and Princess of Chimay invited him to spend some time at their home in Belgium, which he did, to the benefit of his health and spirits. When they repeated the offer in 1808, he again went. He was still not doing any composing, but continued to study botany, and take long walks in the Belgian countryside. The summer passed by, and Cherubini stayed on at his friends' through the autumn. November 22, the celebration of the feast of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians, was approaching. A delegation from the musical society of Chimay arrived at the castle. They asked Cherubini to do their town the honor of composing a mass, to be performed at Chimay church in celebration of the feast. At first he refused, saying that such a project was "impossible." But the very next day, he took an extra long walk, and came home and wrote down the beginnings of the Kyrie to the Mass in F. Only the Kyrie and Gloria were finished in time for the celebration of St. Cecilia's Day, but they were performed under Cherubini's direction with the limited resources of the town, to great acclaim. After his return to Paris, he completed the rest of the mass, which was premiered in 1809 at the Hotel de Babylon in Paris, at the town-house of the Prince and Princess of Chimay. All of the dignitaries of Paris attended the premiere, and Cherubini was hailed as the new master of sacred music. The mass was much admired and praised by all those in attendance. ~ All Music Guide
