Haunting. Rhythmic. Catchy. Beautiful. These are the words that come to mind when listening to Tilting at Windmills, the newest offering from Omaha/Chicago five-piece Consafos. Fronted by Stefanie Drootin (Bright Eyes, The Good Life), the band originally formed in Los Angeles out of the Sunflower Tribe collective (Still Life, Books on Tape) before relocating to the Midwest and releasing 2003’s Such Is the Way of Things. Crossing genres like a jaywalker after last call, Consafos effortlessly blend elements of indie, folk, alternative and Americana into a style that is unique yet familiar. These are ten delicately crafted tracks of intense lyrical emotion, played out over a serene backdrop and Drootin’s haunting, almost childlike vocals. There is a shattered innocence here, and a dark truth, spliced with an honesty and hope rarely found in indie music and a musical maturity not seen on their previous releases.
Now for the name dropping: Stefanie Drootin has been a recurring member of Bright Eyes, is a member of The Good Life (Tim Kasher/Cursive), and has toured with Azure Ray (all of whom are on Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records). This album also features guitarist Billy Talbot, son of Bill Talbot (Neil Young’s Crazy Horse), Tiffany Kowalski (Head of Femur, Dave Dondero, Bright Eyes, Mayday, Lullaby for the Working Class), Dan McCarthy (Mayday, Azure Ray) and Dave Max Crawford (Head of Femur). Produced by acclaimed Chicago indie producer Mark Greenberg, Tilting at Windmills will be released to coincide with U.S. tour dates with The Good Life this spring.
