Happy, melodic Oi! from the "havin' a laugh and havin' yer say" camp, the best reference point for Vicious Rumours is Peter and the Test Tube Babies or Major Accident. I'd also be surprised if new school "sugar Oi!" lads the Vanilla Muffins aren't influenced by VR.
Any Time, Day Or Night is good fun with peppy tempos and lighthearted lyrics. I was kinda surprised these happy-go-lucky Brits would be even remotely in to skinhead music. Then I heard "Soul Patrol", a threatening song about "getting" (which I interpreted to mean fighting) the much reviled "soulboys" (don't know exactly what a soulboy is, but I suspect it's a British youth clique either in to R&B or disco music and fashion) in Britain. That VR was willing to issue a good beating on those grounds assured me that this is a proper skinhead-oriented record. They even mock some of the hits of the day in "Soul Patrol", including "Oops Upside your head" and "Get Down On It". Other than that number, all songs seem pretty good natured. Reissue includes their two tracks from the This Is Oi! compilation.
My only complaint is that this reissue is not up to the Captain Oi! standard of excellence in terms of the packaging. There's zero liner notes and the lyrics are copied from the lyric sheet in the original LP. This causes the lyrics to be so fucking small that I have a headache from trying to read them. Regardless, it sounds fuckin' great. Classic second wave Oi!
