Interesting self-released debut from West Coast shoegazers The Meeting Places, a nifty little CDR full of sustain/effects-heavy guitars, dumb-simple drums (strictly beats; highly commendable in lack of frills), and ringing layers-upon-layers of sound.
The heavy, sluggish, cascading "Freeze Our Stares" lets y'all in on the fact that The Meeting Places know 'n' love noise (beauty of & use of), so surprise surprise: Find Yourself Along the Way works best when the group charges ahead with what it knows. Most attempts at cleaner dream-pop here ("Where You Go," "Blur the Line") end up falling kinda flat as the melodies just ain't strong or memorable enough to carry the songs on their own. But zero shame in dressing things up with a bit of guitar wash and squeal, especially when you're capable of doing it as well as this band.
For instance: lovely "Wide Awake" achieves a fine balance, as the chiming guitars hide in the background during the verses, slicing brightly through to the fore once the chorus hits. Nicely done and favorably reminiscent of Creation-era Telescopes (see also the sunny "On Our Own").
For instance: "Take to the Sun," which, once it gets past its crackly, low-fi intro, settles into a heavy bassline groove and picks up rock strength as it goes, peaking with all due fuzzed-out majesty.
For instance: "Same Lies as Yesterday" lays the best of The Meeting Places' noisy intensity atop the group's strongest melody; this is spacerock more than it is shoegazing, more Hopewell in its echo-y guitars and soaring chorus than it is My Bloody Valentine. A proper album closer.
While one does get the sneaking suspicion that The Meeting Places are using noise and guitar effects as ends unto themselves (worrying more about pedals than worrying about writing stronger songs), there's enough spacey sonic bliss-out on Find Yourself Along the Way to let them get away with it. Nothing groundbreaking here, but when the band's on—as they are for the majority of this record—they're most certainly on, and subscribers to the shoegaze/space-rock genre oughta get their rocks off on it. Sign me the fuck up.
