专辑简介
Symphony No. 4 (1979)
Sallinen was commissioned to compose his Symphony No. 4 (1979) for the city of Turku’s 750th anniversary celebrations.
His previous symphonies had been fairly cohesive, dark in tone, but the Fourth Symphony is more varied. Surprisingly, the first movement reveals the influence of Shostakovich, and its mordant irony seems to presage the opera The King Goes Forth to France (1983).
The austere, fragile slow movement is headed “Dona nobis pacem”. The symphony’s dynamic focus is the finale, in which tonally stylized parody collides with effusions of Romantic gloom.
Shadows (1982)
The material of Shadows (1982) is linked to the aforementioned opera. It ranges from the extremes represented by the harrowingly beautiful music for the mad Caroline of the opera and the grotesque march preceding the climax, after which the events are recapitulated in inverted order.
“The material used for Shadows has a clear connection with that in the beginning of Act III of my third opera, The King Goes Forth to France. This is no coincidence, for the orchestral prelude was composed immediately after the completion of the opera’s second act. Thus the conception of this piece was also for me a kind of prelude before I embarked on writing the third and last act of The King.
“Yet Shadows is in form an entirely independent orchestral work, although its lyrical and dramatic ingredients reflect the philosophy of the opera.”(Aulis Sallinen)
Symphony No. 5 (1985/1987) “Washington Mosaics”
The Symphony No. 5 (1985/1987) is Sallinen’s major symphonic effort to date [1995]. Like Shadows, it was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C. and its chief conductor Mstislav Rostropovich.
Sallinen notes: “Whereas the movements of a symphony usually each have their own material, the movements of this work certain subjects are repeated as such, like identical pieces of mosaic.” The many ‘mosaics’ build up to a rich, multi-dimensional whole.
The most tonal passages are flowing Late Romanticism, with occasional unmistakable touches of Sibelius and Mahler. Elsewhere, the music solidifies into static carpets of sound. The emphasis is on the first and last of the five movements. ---Kimmo Korhonen
