Blackstrap comes from Sweden and is connected with the Dutch Sally Forth Records which has been around for 10 years now as an indielabel and currently releases bands such as This Beautiful Mess and The Spirit That Guides Us. Blackstrap is a band that has a very pleasurable sound with songs that contain equal amounts of shoegaze in the spirit of Spiritualized or My Bloody Valentine and doomy waverock such as The Jesus & Marychain can be traced. Blackstrap has some sleazy rocking moments as well and then they sound more towards Stooges whilst at the subtle moments a name such as Smashing Pumpkins comes to mind when you search for comparisons. Singer Jonatan sounds like Mark Lanega or Robert Pollard at their best moments. The vocals of Maria add an extra enchanting dimension to the songs. Steal My Horses and Run is the second album in the existence of this band that is already around since 1994, and this album is more rock oriented than the previous album Ghost Children, released in 2003. The pompuous string moments have been changed mostly for tighter songs that can be performed better in a live setting and this really works. The album is nicely balanced and the songs keep the attention focussed. Highlights are ‘Winning Speech’, ‘Lay Down Low’, ‘The Open Road’ and the beautiful last song ‘Take Your Time’. Compliments for the nice artwork, as this really reflects the music that can be found on the disc very good. This second album of Blackstrap shows it is obvious they are here to stay.
