The music of Toronto-based instrumental band The Hylozoists lends itself well to lofty analogies. One listener might liken it to a soundtrack in search of an art house film. Another might find it ideal accompaniment for a macabre carnival carousel. Perhaps if Fellini and Leone had started a circus, their organ grinders would’ve churned out music akin what you will hear on The Hylozoists long-awaited sophomore album La Fin du Monde.
Conceived by producer/multi-instrumentalist/composer Paul Aucoin in 2001, Aucoin composed and recorded the debut album La Nouvelle Gauche himself. A line-up of backing musicians was assembled for festivals and tour dates, leaving reams of critical acclaim in their wake. As Aucoin's duties with The Sadies increased, both in studio and on stage, The Hylozoists was relegated to the back burner but never far from his mind. In 2004, Aucoin drafted a new compliment of Hylozoists from Toronto-area bands and it was then The Hylozoists shed the shackles of "side project" and blossomed into a full-blown supergroup.
The Hylozoists are a rotating cast of exemplary players - a veritable "who's who" list of Canadian musicians that perform with The Weakerthans, FemBots, Cuff the Duke, The Sadies, Old Soul, Hayden, Broken Social Scene, Heavy Blinkers, Golden Dogs, Deadly Snakes, Bodega, Minotaurs, Andre Ethier, Hopeful Monster and more.
