Released on limited edition 10" vinyl with a further four songs available from a download coupon, this latest outing from songwriter Eugene McGuinness sees him joined by a full band, and they sound in fine voice here. 'I Want Action', rather than being a cover of the song of the same name by '80s hair-rockers Poison, is instead a charming Smiths-like exercise in intelligent, well-crafted guitar-pop, and 'Dear English Reserve' is a typically eloquent slice of modern-day Britpop with that twinge of music hall about it that occasionally creeps into McGuinness' work. The EP closes on the excellent 'Grogshop', which overflows with ideas, sounding like a band experimenting with form and finding their feet. Recommended.
