The very first full-length CD release on Wave Music's minimal offshoot label, Clicktracks, Phantom Power's Patterns gets off to a slightly erroneous start by offering up an opener called 'Space In Your Face' - easily the worst track title I've read today; in fact, let's say it's the worst thing that's happened to the English language since the invention of the text message. That might sound like a rash, overly dramatised, sweeping statement (and it is), but just slow it down and deliberate on it a moment if you will: 'Space In Your Face'. Dreadful. There's more woe to follow ('Mace In Your Face' isn't exactly an appealing sequence of words either), but let's abandon the noble pursuit of track title assessment/assassination for a moment and address the music. Phantom Power stir up a finely proportioned, highly polished brand of techno reductionism, which although billed as minimal doesn't really feel like the kind of nuts 'n' bolts, clicks 'n' cuts output you'd get from Minus, or the likes of Force Tracks before it. Instead, this music tends to be rather full-bodied and high of tempo - the minimal factor comes into play via the way tracks like 'Deconditioning' and 'Jesus Juice' structure themselves: rather than constantly adding new sounds these productions evolve from a relatively small number of sonic elements, modulating and fully exploring their own timbral identities. Consequently you get morphing hard techno like 'Panawave' and the self-explanatory future-warehouse sounds of 'Acid Uber Alles' - strong, solid stuff.
