Teen idols of the late '50s and early '60s are usually pointed to as the nadir of the rock & roll era. The company line is that all the one-named pretty boys and cute kids ruined what was a dangerous and exciting musical landscape and left it for dead until the Beatles came along and rescued it. Leaving aside the fact that Del Shannon, Dion, Sam Cooke, Roy Orbison and others were making what amounts to some of the best music ever at this time, love them or hate them you can't dispute that there were some pretty decent songs released by the teen idols, as documented on Time-Life's Teen Idols. The 22 songs from the likes of Neil Sedaka, Tommy Sands, Connie Francis and Brian Hyland are tiny masterpieces of well-crafted pop music. Among the great tunes are some classics like Johnny Burnette's swaggering "You're Sixteen," Bobby Vee's "Rubber Ball," Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her," Johnny Tillotson's "Poetry in Motion" and Shelley Fabares' "Johnny Angel." Nothing to set your blood boiling but plenty to get your lips humming, Teen Idols is a very nice snapshot of a simple and smooth period of pop music that shouldn't be overlooked just because the rock snobs tell you to.
