专辑简介

Cellist Hugh Livingston had been exploring the fringes of contemporary, electro-acoustic, and improvised music for some time when EMF released Strings & Machines. The CD culls four works for cello and computer by Mark Danks, Guy Garnett, Sean Griffins, and a collective composition by Danks, Livingston, and Michael Theodore. All pieces were commissioned and premiered by the cellist in 1996 and represent the fruits of a project initiated five years earlier at the University of California, San Diego. Each work explores an aspect of interaction with the instrument. In "Headingsouth," the cellist is led by projected graphics and sound processing. For "Interactions III" the performer controls a set of computer responses with foot triggers. "Stryx" turns out to be the most interesting moment: it focuses on difference tones, a psycho-acoustic illusion. Livingston produces long notes, varying the pressure applied to the bow while the computer emits "ghost" harmonics, creating a fascinating soundscape. "Qwfwq" implies real-time sound capture and processing fed back to the performer along with processed tapes from previous performances of the piece -- an accretion-in-progress, so to speak. It could have become swarmed with sounds and overwhelming, but it only retains a nice level of activity with clarity of intent. Strings & Machines makes a good album of music for instrument and computer, just puzzling enough to keep you guessing. ~ Fran?ois Couture, All Music Guide
