Arable has been farming the most pastoral electronic sounds for a few years now, and they have brought us such ripe delights as Psapp, Matinee Orchestra and Gavouna. Now, as this troubled year draws to a much-needed close they show us once more that they really do know how to reap some of the finest home-listening music in the bloated genre with this latest full-length from Dollboy. Entitled 'Casual Nudism' and with a cover featuring more than it's fair share of flesh, you might think this record would sound something in the vein of a 70s porno soundtrack, but no, Oliver Cherer has rustled up something far more theatrical and far more magical than porn could ever be. Think Benjamin Britten's flawless opera 'Peter and the Wolf' and you'll be on the right lines, I'm talking oboes, flutes, glockenspiel, xylophone - if it twinkles, it's in there and with this arsenal of playful bars and pipes, Cherer creates magic. As if it was the soundtrack to a bumper book of fiendish fairy tales, 'Casual Nudism' flows through endless emerald-green forests and wrestles with ancient dragons to reach its gold-tinted goal. What makes 'Casual Nudism' all the more addictive is not only Cherer's glittering imagery, it's his ability to make these pictures so painstakingly subtle. Not once does the album leap into the realms of parody, instead it keeps itself on a level, sounding at the same time blissful and effortlessly relaxing. Take 'Aquasek' for example, what could easily be paired with a walk through an enchanted wood is punctuated by simple handclaps and the most delicate of electronics, making it warming as well as mystifying. It would be all too easy to drop 'Casual Nudism' into the blubbery genre of 'folk-tronica' but as you will no doubt understand on hearing the record, there is far more to it than a lazy classification. Oliver Cherer has come up with an album that is truly out there on its own - yet seems perfectly matched in Arable's homespun catalogue of delights. Highly recommended.
