Known for their stellar live show, Minneapolis' Happy Apple have been proving, like precious few of their inspirations and peers, that jazz can connect with a wide variety of audiences, whether played in traditional jazz venues or rock clubs. A trio consisting of saxophone, drums, and electric bass, Happy Apple perform original modern progressive jazz, incorporating elements of free jazz, fusion, and world music. Press comparisons often mention '60s-era John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Weather Report. As the Minneapolis Star Tribune said, "Happy Apple makes music that's mechanically unmatched and unmistakably passionate, taking listeners to places they never thought they'd see and hear." Jazz Weekly singled them out as "one of the most exciting new groups around," and Jazziz called them "extraordinary new talent." Since their inception in 1997, Happy Apple have released three records to wide critical acclaim, received considerable national radio airplay and performed throughout the country, including performances at festivals such as CMJ, South By Southwest, and the Sundance Film Festival. Their last record, Body Popping-Moon Walking-Top Rocking, debuted at #5 on the CMJ jazz radio charts. Happy Apple have won "Jazz Record of the Year" and "Jazz Group of the Year" at the Minnesota Music Awards for three years running, in 1998, 1999 and 2000. They also won "Best Jazz Group" in the 1999 and 2000 City Pages Readers Poll. Drummer David King was a 1997 winner of Jazziz magazine's "Percussion on Fire" international drummer competition. As one reviewer said, "After hearing Happy Apple, you may not listen to music quite the same way again. I don't."
