Now I'm a self-confessed Starving Weirdos junkie, so I don't have to exactly be 'sold' on their side projects, however I'm slowly beginning to think that the side projects are even better than the SW material out there. RV Paintings is a trio of Brian Pyle, his brother Jon and their good friend Spencer and between them the three come up with some quite beguiling drones. This is not anywhere near as oblique as I know you're thinking, rather 'Trinity Rivers' is a markedly relaxing affair, all lightly paced percussion, deeeeeeeep synth and organ drones, singing bowls, the occasional tribal howl and everything is melted and smudged into a thick and deeply enjoyable forty minutes of pure bliss. This is spiritual music for want of a better word and like the incredible 'Slaap Zucht' from Machinefabriek (also on Root Strata) it would be the perfect record to lull you into a state of deep, deep hypnosis. I've long been a sucker for drone music but it has to be different to get my attention these days, and RV Paintings manage to get me itching and scratching thanks to their attention to detail and deep sense of the organic. The sounds on this record are almost unconcerned with technology, almost totally disconnected from our modern world - maybe this is thanks to the band's gorgeous Humboldt abode, but whatever it is it makes for a darn tootin' listening experience, and what more can a dude ask for than that? Huge recommendation - drone fans take note.
