Archie Fisher was born in Glasgow on 23 October 1939. His sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher, are also singers. In 1960 he moved to Edinburgh and appeared regularly at a folk club called "The Howff" run by Roy Guest. In 1962 Ray and Archie released a single on the Topic label, "Far Over the Forth". They appeared on the BBC programme 'Hootenanny' In 1965 the whole family released an album "Traditional & New Songs from Scotland". Bert Jansch was a regular visitor to The Howff in 1960 and received guitar lessons from another regular performer, Len Partridge. Archie met Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer and Mike Heron, later to become The Incredible String Band.
Ray Fisher from Scotland is one of the finest folk singers. Ray, together with her brother Archie became interested in folk song during the skiffle era. Influenced by rare recordings brought to Glasgow by American servicemen, and meeting traditional singers like Jeannie Robertson, they soon became mainstays of the Scottish folk scene. Bill Leader recorded the wonderful Fisher Family album "Traditional & New Songs From Scotland" by Ray, Archie and their younger sisters, during a Scottish recording trip in 1965. In the mid-1960s Ray and Archie were regular performers at folk clubs around Britain and on television north of the border. After her marriage to Colin Ross of the High Level Ranters she performed, recorded and travelled less often. Ray Fisher, together with Anne Briggs and the Waterson sisters, are amongst the greatest singers of the British Folk Revival.
